Hinterthal (1,000 metres or 3,281 feet above sea level) is found approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) to the east of Saalfelden and some 60 minutes southwest of the city of Salzburg, Austria. It is at the foot of the High King Mountain (Hochkönig) as part of Maria Alm am Steinernen Meer, in the Austrian state of Salzburg.
Hinterthal is situated at the end of the valley and as a result, is a quiet and peaceful place to visit.
Mainly known as a winter ski resort and a summer hiking area, Hinterthal has close views of the High King Mountain Hochkönig and Sleeping Virgin Mountains.
This was one of the first places non-Austrian people could buy homes in Austria, and consequently, it is home to many rich and famous people.
For skiing Hinterthal has three ski lifts leaving the village, accessing over 150 kilometres (90 mi) of skiing, plus its own nursery slope and its own ski school, making it a good place to go for beginners.
Hinterthal also has an impressive snow record due to its micro climate and the ski season usually starts in late November and lasts until mid April.
About the Area
There are no beaches in Austria but plenty of lakes. We have a lake at Clubhotel that guests can use in the summer, but be aware, the water can still be cold even in the summer!! There is a Lido with a large pool and other facilities at Maria-Alm
The Hochkönig Region comprises the small but lovely little villages of Hinterthal, Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach. It is also part of the Ski Amadé alliance where a single pass allows you access to 276 lifts and 865km of piste. Whereas the local Hochkönig pass covers 150km of piste between 800m and 2000m. There is 40 kms of cross country trails and the nearest airport to Hochkönig is Salzburg.
There are also plenty of opportunities for those of you who would prefer to gaze on the mountains from down in the valley:
either out on the cross-country trail, hiking through forests covered deep in snow, or perhaps out on the ice. Maybe you’ll opt to grab your sled and zip down the mountain on one of our all-natural toboggan runs.
Of one thing you can rest assured:
When the snow glistens on the peaks of this magical mountain scenery, the powder snow fills the air with every turn you make and you find yourself in the midst of a winter fairy tale, you know you’re now in the heart of the Hochkönig’s Winter Kingdom!
