Property Description

We first discovered SNAIL’S PLACE in 1977 when it was a derelict ruin.

By 1979, this picturesque 17th century thatched cottage (a Grade II listed building) had been completely restored by an Old Buildings Preservation and Restoration Trust, sympathetically blending exposed beams, traditional fixtures and fittings together with modern household facilities.

In 2004, the cottage underwent a major re-furbishment with a new kitchen, bathroom, and re-decoration throughout.

Nestling in the rolling South Dorset Downs and within the natural beauty of Hardy country, Winfrith Newburgh is a quiet conservation village complete with medieval church and manor house, and is only 3 miles from the ‘Jurassic Coast’ – designated as England’s first natural World Heritage Site – with its spectacular scenic wonders of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. They are a short five minute drive away, or even within walking distance for the more adventurous. In fact, you are in ideal, peaceful walking countryside. To the north is Winfrith Heath, one of the few remaining areas of ancient English heathland, home to many species of rare wild flowers and birds. Weymouth is 11 miles away, Dorchester 9 miles. The Isle of Purbeck is about half an hour’s scenic drive, where attractions include Corfe Castle, Kimmeridge and Swanage

Beyond, the road leads to the outstanding National Trust beach at Studland – one of the cleanest beaches in the UK. Bournemouth, (20 miles), and nearby Poole Harbour with all their many attractions can be reached in about 45 minutes. In the opposite direction lie historic Abbotsbury (with its famous Swannery and Tropical Gardens), the extraordinary Chesil Beach, and further along the beautiful coastal road are Bridport and Lyme Regis.

To the North lie the famous cottage and birthplace of novelist Thomas Hardy at Higher Bockhampton, 18th century Milton Abbey, and Milton Abbas, a hillside street of almost identical whitewashed cob and thatched cottages set in a sweeping green stretch of continuous lawn. Other places of interest in the surrounding Wessex countryside are Britain’s only silk farm at Compton House, Sherbourne Castle (built by Sir Walter Raleigh), the magnificent of Maiden Castle just outside Dorchester, one of the largest collections of armoured fighting vehicles in the world at Bovington Tank Museum, and the natural wonder of the Blue Pool near Wareham. The local village General Stores also sells newspapers and is open on Sunday mornings. There are plenty of good pubs and eating places nearby, and friends continually add to an ever growing list of new discoveries on the kitchen notice board. The village pub and restaurant, The Red Lion, is a ten minute walk away. Two more pub/restaurants are about a mile away, The Countryman at East Knighton, and the thatched Sailor’s Return at East Chaldon.

The living room on the ground floor has a large inglenook fireplace with original bread oven and is ideal for log fires during winter. It is furnished with dining table and chairs, a comfortable two/three seater sofa, an arm-chair, colour television, VHS, and telephone for incoming calls.
The kitchen is well equipped with fitted cupboards, fridge, oven, microwave, washer/drier, and an abundance of cooking utensils.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one with two small single beds, and one with a double bed. All the beds have pillows and duvets. The bathroom/WC has a power shower, heated towel rail and electric wall heater. .Two electric storage heaters keep the cottage cosy during the winter months; one in the living room, and one upstairs on the landing. All rooms have fan heaters. Incidentally, there are no electric meters; all costs are included in the booking charge. There is a small secluded garden with patio area, and garden furniture is stored in the back porch.
